Carmen Navarro Designs

Recently I attended the grand opening event of The Party Studio owned by Carmen Morin of Carmen Navarro Designs. Carmen is an event stylist. She is a talented designer and has had her work featured in magazines and on party blogs. She is a strong businesswoman, educated in the arts, professional, and not to mention she is a big sweetheart. I am elated for her continued success in her field. So I happily attended her event. When I walked in, everywhere I turned in the studio there was something handcrafted and meticulously decorated. It was truly a feast for the eyes. There were fancy decorated cookies made to look like mascara and lipstick and eye shadow, colorful macaroons on golden cake stands, a lovely layered cake and these giant hand crafted paper flowers adorning a gold and light pink wall. There were glam and sparkle table clothes, gold inspirational quotes, colorful hand-made tassels for sale, beautiful vintage furniture, and cake stands galore. The whole studio was serene and inspirational. I seriously was in heaven. She also rents out some of her equipment. From dessert tables to entire events, she takes care of the whole look and styles everything to perfection. She is truly creative. Please visit her website and follow her on Instagram and Facebook @CarmenNavarroDesigns

My design in print

There’s nothing quite like the feeling when you see your work in print. This particular piece is the logo for Think Kings Publishing. I am the Graphic Designer, a contributing author and Production Director for this indie publishing company. This book is the third novel in the Child of Atlantis series by the talented Perry Covington. My logo is on every book, every novel in the series that he has sold. With over 17,000 likes on Facebook, he has a growing cult following. Not only do I celebrate his success but I am a little giddy for my exposure as well.

When thinking about this logo we took the simplistic approach. Due to the logo being placed on books with a variety of colors we went for a black and white minimal color palette. It has also been used on shirts, banners, flyers, and coming soon stickers and bookmarks. It is so exciting and satisfying. I love what I do.

Hop on over to Perry’s Facebook page and follow him on his journey. And thanks for tagging along with me on mine.

Creative Spotlight – Perry Covington

Creative Spotlight

Perry Covington is a dear friend, a fellow Think King and creative nerd. He is a talented writer who is bursting at the seams with ideas. He recently launched the third novel in his Child of Atlantis series called Catalyst. So in light of that momentous achievement, without further gilding the lily and with no more ado, I give you Perry Covington: author, creative, blogger, ninja, fellow badass…

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Perry Covington, I am a journalist and also a novelist. I live in California with my wife, two daughters, a crazy dog named Ninja, and four fish named Leonardo, Donatello, Rafael and Michelangelo. Our family really likes ninjas.

What is your current project?

Right now I have several novels in the works. The main project is called Child of Atlantis. I just released the third book for that series called Catalyst. I even have a children’s book I would like to do. I’ve written it out already but I just need an illustrator. I am constantly writing down story ideas or working on writing projects for the news. My latest one though is my novel called the Hunter. It’s an entry I am going to put forth to national novel writing month. It’s about two sisters who are separated at childhood. One is raised as a hunter that kills witches and the younger sister is raised as a witch. Later in their lives fate brings them back together, from there the adventure begins.
What keeps you motivated to create?  What inspires you?

Several things inspire me and keep me motivated, but it comes in spurts. Many times I will turn to particular movies, books, or comics for inspiration. Sometimes I will listen to soundtracks for movies to get me in a particular mood, depending on the scene I’m writing. The true test of a writer is to be able to power through the times where you were not particularly motivated or inspired. If you can get through the lolls then you will find that you are more likely to be productive

How do you organize your creativity to keep you on task?

For most who know me, I am not a very organized person. When I am outlining my books I find that it’s easier for me to work on a large whiteboard. I really can’t explain why. Working on the whiteboard helps me to see the big picture, and I can map out an entire storyline that way. Then I take a picture of the whiteboard so I can move on to the next plotline. I’ve tried using a computer to outline but the ideas just don’t flow for some reason. When I am on the go I carry around a moleskin notebook to jot down ideas and notes whenever the mood strikes.

Can you provide some advice for aspiring artists, a favorite quote, or perhaps some resources to help them along the way?

The quote that I always turn to comes from Benjamin Franklin. He said ‘energy and persistence alter all things’. That has always been my mantra. Many times writers will get critical feedback that can be a little disheartening. The trick is to keep on moving forward. Put forth the energy, persist through all obstacles, and you will be successful.

XOXO graphic

Just playing with some watercolor brushes.  A free night to play around on my computer.  A little bit of music, a little bit of Pinterest and a whole lot of unwinding.  Sometimes you just need to take a break to refresh.  Tomorrow night I am unplugging.  It’s just that simple.  Happy weekend.

In honor of the recent Super Bowl and the big winners.  The game, the performance and the commercials are always so fun to watch.  I love it all.  It inspired me.
